Mark Johnson

Mark is the founder and owner of Zebrachair Media. He has over 25 years of marketing experience promoting education, software platforms, scientific journals, cable television, and newspapers.

Since July 2019, Mark has been the head of marketing, communication and public relations for the Peralta Community College District in Oakland, California. The district includes Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, and Merritt College, serving the community of Northern Alameda County and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Prior to that Mark was a senior consultant and senior marketing manager at Research Solutions, Inc. (better known as Reprints Desk, a SaaS solutions provider for researchers in the biotech and pharma industry).

Before launching Zebrachair in 2018, Mark worked at Public Library of Science (PLOS) and served as the head of marketing from August 2015 through January 2018. While at PLOS he introduced programs including #PLOSmostread and #PLOSmostcited, helped launch PLOS Research News, PLOS Channels and Aperta, the PLOS submission and peer review system, and led the PLOS ONE 10th Anniversary Celebration, programs which provided greater recognition for PLOS authors, reviewers and editors.

Previously, Mark was Vice President, Publisher Relations at HighWire Press Inc., (formerly an auxiliary business unit of the Stanford University Libraries) where he led the account management and customer support department. While at HighWire, Mark helped his many clients achieve their editorial and financial goals.

As Marketing Director for Elsevier’s Cell Press imprint he helped launch many of the Cell-branded journals including Molecular Cell, Developmental Cell, Cancer Cell, and Cell Metabolism.

Mark received his bachelor's degree at the University of Kansas and his master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, both in Radio-Television-Film (and an undergraduate double-major in psychology).

He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area where he enjoys cycling and swimming. He volunteers for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, serving in various roles including fundraiser, mentor and coach for the Silicon Valley Team In Training cycle team since 2010. Mark is a triathlete and is a multiple finisher at Ironman Arizona and several of the “Escape From Alcatraz” events.
